There was an old lady......

This book has been one of our favorites around the house for years.  I end up having to sing the book over and over again.  I remember singing it as a child myself! I don't sing the "perhaps she'll die" though-we sing "oh me, oh my".  After she swallows a horse, she is full of course:)  When I saw this on Pinterest I just had to make it!  The girls have so much fun singing the song with something other than our big book.  I saw the idea pinned from here.  Once we started making it, I couldn't stop!  I was also glad to get to use some of the felt that I have had forever!

We went through the house to find the things that the old woman eats.  Thankfully we were able to find everything we needed.

Ha!   Here she is!  I had this trash can in a closet and we decorated her with pieces of felt.  The arms are pipe cleaners.  I applied everything using a glue gun.

We also made a story game using  printouts that I got from here.

We colored the the cut outs.  It is hard to see but the old lady is covered with contact paper.  I then taped an overhead transparency to her belly.  Then I taped it to a large envelope (with a cut out circle).  The girls can feed her and you can see what is in her belly. 

Valentines Day

Here are some of the things that we have been working on this past week! 

It is kind of hard to see in the picture.  This is contact paper cut in the shape of the heart.  The girls then covered it with pieces of tissue paper.

We then used the scraps from the butterflies as stencils. 

We also made heart people using different sizes of hearts.

Ta da!

We had some flowers that were starting to dry out.  We took the flowers and made prints onto heart shapes.

This was a huge hit in our house!

We tried painting with marshmallow hearts.

The heart shape really didn't hold up with the paint.

We painted with the end of a celery bunch.  It makes nice flower looking prints.

Beginning letter sounds

I created a monster.....Lila has me scrambling around every day now to do this with different letters.  I decided to start with the letters L,S and M for Lila, Sophia and Maddux (our dog).  I walked around the house and collected objects that began with those letters.   They would pick an item, say what it was and repeat the beginning sound.  Then it would go into the correct letter basket.

Huff and Puff

One of the books that girls currently enjoy is The Three Little Pigs.  Every day Lila will point out things that a wolf could blow away and assure us that we were all safe in our house because it is made of bricks.  I took this as an opportunity to talk about the force of air and how it moves things.  We did a couple of different things to explore this. 

Here is what we used in our first experiment......

I gave them each a post it with "yes or no" on it.  They had to guess if it would blow away or if it wouldn't.  Each of them had a straw and used it to try to blow objects away.

A filled up balloon moved easily

A balloon that was not blown up did not move easily

Lila determined that things that were heavy would not move when we blew air on them.  Things that were light traveled far.

An empty cup moved all over!

A cup with water did not move.

The final sort of what moved and what didn't.

Will paint move?  Lila was a bit skeptical.

The thicker the paint, the harder it was to blow around.

I added a bit of water to thin out the paint and the fun began.

Balloon races!  Who is the fastest?  We used straws to blow the balloon to the finish line.
